He won an Olympic gold medal in the flyweight division at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Gamboa also won a gold medal at the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan American Games. He won bronze medals at the 2005 World Amateur Championships and 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games and a silver medal at the 2005 World Cup in Moscow.
